ST PATRICK´S DAY

Who is St Patrick?
He is the patron saint of Ireland.

Why Saint Patrick's Day?
Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. It is also a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

When is it celebrated?
It is celebrated on March 17th because that was the day that St. Patrick died.

Where is it celebrated?
It is an Irish tradition but it has been adapted in the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, and Russia.

How do people celebrate it?
With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th.
Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish go to church in the morning.
Big cities and small towns celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games.

Why is it so popular?
One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring.

What is the icon of Ireland?
One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. And this stems from a more bona fide Irish tale that tells how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity.
